Lady Superior

Lady Superior
Our lovely, feisty Lady Superior.

For almost 30 years now, I've had the privilege to live within a couple miles of the world's largest freshwater lake. Like most people who have spent any significant amount of time on her shores, her water flows in my veins. She's held me, she's played with my kids, she's listened to me talk about countless hopes and dreams and complaints. I've watched her hold the moon and stars, and both release and catch the sun. She's also terrified me, battered me, and taken many, many lives, though I'd never call her "angry." Fierce, yes, but never angry.

My friend Molly Wallen of the Make-Believe Spurs did a fantastic job of wrapping words and melody around how so many of us feel about this inland sea. When I first heard it, I immediately committed myself to the quest of boosting this song past The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald as the official song of the UP. It's a good song, but it's tired and worn-out. It also planted the seeds for a print, which is finally up in the shop!

Ink on Paper

I'm really happy with how these turned out! The lake silhouette was carved on a piece of shina plywood, and the text is 72pt Sans-Serif Light lead type, printed on Madero Beach Speckletone paper (which has become my new favorite). Want one?

Words Elsewhere

With Hintology pulling the plug after a year of limbo, I decided to publish the essay I had submitted here. This is probably my favorite piece of writing to date. Short, punchy, makes you stop and think for a bit. Opens the door to something you might not have considered before.

Read it here.

Other Rambles

For the first time in 8 years, I have a job! I'm leaving the world of freelance for a while and joining the Community Foundation of Marquette County. It was too good an opportunity to pass up, and I'm pumped to be able to help make my community a little bit better every day. Not surprisingly, when I was trying to decide whether or not to apply, I went to the lake to brood, to sort out my thoughts and find some guidance.

See you out there,
